The 25-year-old played a prominent role at Old Trafford over the last two seasons, making 63 appearances in all competitions during the final year of Sir Alex Ferguson’s management, as well as the short-lived reign of David Moyes.
However, he has clearly failed to impress new United boss Louis van Gaal, who has brought in the likes of Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera, to further limit Cleverley’s playing time.
A graduate of the club’s academy, Cleverley made his United debut in 2009, before loan spells with Leicester City, Watford and Wigan Athletic.
Upon returning to the Old Trafford set-up in 2011, the midfielder quickly maneuvered himself into England contention, and was capped 13 times between 2012 and 2013, before falling out of favour and missing out on this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
He, and United will be hoping that this latest move – which will likely see him become a regular at Villa Park – will help reignite his career.
