The 27-year-old has been one of Benfica’s key performers this season, bagging himself four goals in 27 appearances as they claimed yet another Portuguese title.
United are looking into a number of possibilities this summer, as they look to not only bolster their squad, but replace misfiring members of their current playing staff.
A Bola, one of Portugal’s popular papers, have splashed the story across their front page on Wednesday and claim that the deal will be formally completed following the Taça da Liga final against Maritimo on Friday.

Gaitan has also been linked with a move to Chelsea on several occasions, but if this report is true it would appear that the Blues have missed out.
The image of A Bola’s front page has been plastered all over social media, as the speculation over the Argentine’s future gathers pace.
