The 24-year-old becomes the Black Cats’ fifth signing this month along with Marcos Alonso and Santiago Vergini on-loan and Oscar Ustari and Ignacio Scocco permanently.
Bridcutt will link up with former manager at Brighton Gustavo Poyet, with the Uruguayan working with the midfield ace for three years.
Poyet signed the Scotland international from Chelsea on a free transfer after he progressed from the Blues youth academy.
Bridcutt spent three-and-a-half years on the south coast, following loan spells with Yeovil Town, Watford and Stockport County.
The former Stamford Bridge youngster leaves the Amex Stadium having played 150 matches for the Seagulls in all competitions.
Bridcutt plays mostly as a defensive midfielder and the Scot’s arrival could well signal the end of club captain Lee Cattermole’s time at the Stadium of Light.
Cattermole is expected to complete the switch to Stoke City before the window closes.
