The Sydney Roosters have announced the signing of Matt McIlwrick on a one-year deal.
McIlwrick was granted an early release from his contract with the Canberra Raiders and is seen as an ideal back-up to Jake Friend.
“We are pleased to have secured the services of Matt, who we view as the ideal back-up hooker to Jake Friend,” Roosters recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan said.
“With explosive speed around the ruck and high work-rate in defence, as well as his ability to slot into lock, Matt and will add some great depth to our interchange and we look forward to his developing as part of our squad.”
The 23-year-old thanked the Raiders for the support and said he was looking forward to a new challenge with the 2013 premiership-winners.
“The Raiders brought me over from Christchurch and gave me a chance to chase my NRL dream and for that I will always remain thankful,” said McIlwrick.
“I’ll never forget my time at the club and I thank everyone who has helped me along the way.
“The Roosters are a great club who have had plenty of success over the past few years and I’m excited to be a part of it going forward.”
McIlwrick played 19 games with the Raiders since making his NRL debut in 2012.
