Klopp continues the German’s reputation of being outspoken.
After a dramatic transfer deadline day in the Premier League, Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has praised Arsenal’s signing of Mesut Ozil but is bemused by 80% of the others.
The German coach – who is a gift to the media due to Klopp’s proneness to giving brilliant soundbites – has exclaimed that whilst Ozil is a fantastic player, the boss has never heard of most of the English league’s acquisitions.
“The transfer of Ozil is incredible,” the 46-year-old was quoted in the Sun.
“That doesn’t happen often, £42.5million on the last day.
“Mesut is a grenade. Nobody knows why he was sold – maybe Real needed money.”
“But it’s insane what happens in England.
“And 80 per cent of the players, for whom the clubs spent over £600m, I don’t even know.”
Klopp’s side Dortmund purchased several top signings themselves during the summer, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arriving from Saint-Etienne and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan being bought in.
Much of this was funded by the £31.5m sale of Mario Goetze to rivals Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga was still way behind England in terms of spending.
In fact the Premier League saw more money be paid out on new players than any other top flight division in Europe, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City sanctioning the biggest outlays.
Klopp will have the chance to come up against the Gunners and new signing Ozil when the two clubs meet in the Champions League, after being drawn in the same group.
