But the winger refused to stay away.
Tottenham released Andros Townsend when he was 15 but the winger refused to stay away from the training ground, according to former Spurs player Rohan Ricketts.
Townsend, 22, has been with Spurs his entire career and was sent on loan nine times before breaking into the first team this season.
The fearless winger was named man of the match on his England debut, after scoring in the 4-1 win over Montenegro on Friday but Ricketts has claimed Townsend nearly did not make in at White Hart Lane.
@andros_townsend was released by #THFC at 15 years old, refused to be told he was out & kept coming into training ground! Now look DESIRE!!

It’s worth noting that Ricketts left Spurs in 2005 at around the time Townsend was 15, so this information may well have some truth to it.
