Lining up in an unfamiliar diamond formation, it took England some time to get going, although the pace and movement of Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling was a constant threat throughout the evening, with the former eventually hitting the two goals that settled the tie.

GK – Joe Hart (7.5) – A couple of fine reflex saves and commanding work from crosses made for a fine night from the Manchester City man.
RB – John Stones (6) – Some nervy touches on debut from young Stones, but showed enough to suggest he is a future regular.
CB – Gary Cahill (8) – The Chelsea centre back was exceptional at the heart of defence and may well be England’s key player.
