CM: James Milner – 6/10
The Liverpool midfielder was not at his best as he sent several passes astray. Was substituted on 61 minutes, but that is probably more with Switzerland in mind rather than his performance.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 9/10
Managed to thread a few excellent balls through the 10-man opposition defence, including one for Kane’s goal, and was very comfortable on the ball despite a bumpy pitch. Deserves a go against Switzerland.
CM: Ross Barkley – 7/10
Bagged his first senior international goal just 15 seconds after the break. It was a simple header from close range, but the fact that he was in the box is a sign that the Evertonian is adding goals to his game.
AMR: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 8/10
The San Marino defence were petrified by his pace and direct running. He skipped by opponents with ease and, although the final ball was not always there, he picked out Barkley for England’s third. Denied a goal by a truly outstanding save from the San Marino goalkeeper late in the first half.
AML: Jamie Vardy – 6/10
Asked to play on the left side of England’s forward three, Vardy supplied the same industry and pace that has made him such a success at Leicester, but could not get into the box often enough to get a chance for a fairytale goal. Nevertheless, what a moment for a man who was playing in the Conference five years ago.
