ST: Wayne Rooney – 7/10
Gifted a penalty from which he drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 49 England goals. May be disappointed not to have broken the record before being substituted as a precaution just after the hour, but now also has the chance to reach the 50-goal milestone in front of a Wembley crowd.
Substitutes
Harry Kane – 7/10
Will be delighted to get off the mark for the campaign after criticism of his early-season Tottenham Hotspur form, but his finish, a calm and delightful lob, was not one of a striker short on confidence.
Fabian Delph – 6/10
Came on for Milner with half an hour to go and his ball control was tested by the poor surface. May have started ahead of Shelvey had he been at 100% fitness, and the Swansea man grasped his chance.
Theo Walcott – 8/10
Came off the bench to score his first England goals since August 2013. His first was a poacher’s finish at the back post, and his second after a smart run off the right flank. So why does he want to play centrally?!
