AMR: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 6/10
The better of the two wingers, Oxlade-Chamberlain again showed his ability to ghost past defenders with ease. But, if the Arsenal man is going to play in a forward three, his end product needs to be better.
AML: Raheem Sterling – 5/10
Rooney will be eternally grateful that the Man City winger won him the spot kick from which he made history, but Sterling was otherwise poor. Nothing that he did in the attacking third worked for him.
ST: Wayne Rooney – 7/10
Regardless of how he performed, Rooney’s night was always going to be defined simply by whether or not he scored – and he did – surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing tally of 49 with another penalty and writing his name into the record books in the process. He might not hold the same esteem as Charlton, or Gary Lineker, or Jimmy Greaves, but he now has the record, and may well have it forever.
