10. Ashley Cole
Back when Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi played on the right flank for their respective teams, there was only one man to stop them playing: Ashley Cole.
Cole is the only English player who might have legitimately made the world XI we all drew at the back of our exercise books in every lesson – as good as you wanted to believe the likes of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard were at the time.
Still, the Chelsea man will be 33 by the time the World Cup comes around, and Baines is certainly proverbially knocking on the manager’s door. It all depends whether Roy Hodgson will trust the 28 year-old or go with the experience of the senior man.
