12. Steven Gerrard
England captain Steven Gerrard leads by example, and runs from first minute to last.
The Liverpool skipper will be 34 by next summer, but has typically been a diamond in the rough of England performances at major tournaments, with fine performances at Euro 2004 and 2012, and the World Cups of 2006 and 2010, and can be counted on for more of the same in Brazil.
Gerrard’s game has evolved from the lung busting box to box style, and he is more disciplined than before, but still gets dragged out of position all too easily, and Hodgson will need to make sure he retains his shape.
Still, Gerrard is a great player and leader who has proven he doesn’t hide in situations of adversity. England will need players who stand up to be counted like the Liverpool man.
Just don’t play him alongside Frank Lampard, Mr. Hodgson. It doesn’t work.
