England Under-21s host their Welsh counterparts at Pride Park in Derby hoping to continue their impressive qualification campaign for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
The Three Lions sit top of the table after six games, with a three point lead over Moldova in second, who have played a game more.
Besides a 1-1 draw away against Finland U21s in September, Gareth Southgate’s men have maintained a flawless record, defeating Moldova, San Marino (twice), Lithuania and Finland, scoring 22 goals and conceding none in those five games.
Wales U21s could go second with a victory at the iPro Stadium, as they are three points behind Moldova but also with a game in hand, and the prospect of major tournament experience could prove invaluable to the young players.
So impressive have some of the recent performances been from young players Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling that they have earned places in Roy Hodgson’s senior squad for this international break, and while that may weaken the side somewhat, it ought to prove encouraging for the players left in the England U21 squad.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup may come too soon for the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Ravel Morrison and Saido Berahino, but they could be fine prospects for the future.
