Central midfield: Steven Gerrard (C)
Captain Steven Gerrard is still a great player for Liverpool, and though he has had to evolve his game from the driving midfielder of the past, his experience should prove invaluable.
Central midfield: Frank Lampard
Chelsea man Frank Lampard is a legend at Stamford Bridge, but for reasons no one can quite fathom, his partnership with Steven Gerrard has never worked. Roy Hodgson has attempted to reconcile the unhappy couple, but Michael Carrick can feel unlucky to miss out if indeed this proves to to be the selection.
Right wing: James Milner
Mr Dependable James Milner was described by Guardian journalist Barney Ronay as “a man stubbornly doing lengths of a swimming pool while a water polo match goes on around him,” and whilst that may seem unfair, he is a solid rather than inspiring option in the absence of first choice wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Left wing: Danny Welbeck
Welbeck is an incredibly prolific goalscorer for England, with eight goals in 18 appearances for his country. Though he will start from the left here, he may be given license to push into central attacking zones, and will be a threat at set pieces.
