England know what they have to do.
The Three Lions must match Ukraine’s result to be assured of topping FIFA World Cup Qualification Group, and given that Ukraine face San Marino, Roy Hodgson can be near certain that England must win to be assured of their place at the finals next year.
Thanks to a fine 4-1 victory over Montenegro in their last fixture though, there is optimism in the England camp, and England captain Steven Gerrard says pride is his biggest motivator for tonight’s match.
“When Roy first called me over the captaincy and gave it to me full time, the job was to lead the lads into Brazil and it would be a huge satisfaction for me if we do it,” Gerrard told the BBC.
Andros Townsend enjoyed a fantastic first competitive start for his country against Montenegro, but the Tottenham Hotspur winger is an injury doubt to face Poland, and the likes of Arsenal playmaker Jack Wilshere and Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling could feature in his place.
Hodgson is still hopeful that Townsend could play his part.
“We’ll monitor [the knock] but we are very hopeful he will be fit to play,” said the England boss.
The Poles possess dangermen in the likes of Jakub Blaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski, but so long as England can avoid complacency, they should possess enough quality.
“It was a fantastic performance against Montenegro and it was important we enjoyed it but it’s gone now and we need a similar effort against Poland,” said Gerrard.
“I’m confident we can produce the same but it’s a lot different being confident to going and doing it.
“I’ll be very surprised if our players show complacency, we know how important this game is.”
