Thompson said Daniher was lucky to be picked in the squad this week after playing injured against Richmond last Friday.
Essendon coach Mark Thompson says young forward Joe Daniher let his teammates down last week and was lucky to be selected for the Bombers’ clash with West Coast on Saturday.
Daniher was a surprising inclusion against Richmond last week after missing his side’s last two matches with a clavicle injury.
The 20-year-old declared himself fit to play, but was clearly below his best with a goalless performance.
“It’s all about team. If you make decision based on yourself and not the team then it’s not looked upon that well and it becomes a disease,” Thompson said on Friday.
“He’s very apologetic. He’s sorry and he knew he didn’t play well.
“It might be a good thing he stayed in the team so he can redeem himself.”
Thompson went as far as to say Daniher would not have been playing this week had Jake Carlisle been ruled out through injury.
“Carlisle has got a sore back, so if he was there he would’ve struggled,” Thompson said.
“He might come out and take some marks and kick some goals which would be the best result.”
