Essendon club legend Mark Harvey will return to the AFL as an assistant coach, completing line-up of staff underneath coach James Hird.
Harvey, a triple premiership player, has signed a two-year deal with the Bombers.
While Mark Thompson’s future remains unclear, Harvey will fill the spot left vacant by Simon Goodwin.
Harvey was senior coach of Fremantle from 2007-11, before he was sensationally sacked and replaced by Ross Lyon.
He then spent time as an assistant at Brisbane before taking a break in 2014.
The 49-year-old said he was excited to begin working again after a year out of the game.
“It’s really exciting to be back at Essendon,” Harvey said
“After a year away from football, I feel really refreshed and energised about the role I can play to help the team succeed.”
“We have some terrific talent on our playing list and I’m looking forward to working closely with Hirdy and the other coaches to support the players.”
“It’s an exciting time to be back in with the club I love and called home for so many years of my life. Pre-season is less than two weeks away, I can’t wait to get in and start working.”
