Essendon reassures fans in wake of scandal.
Essendon’s chairman David Evans has told fans that the club ‘will get through’ the doping scandal that is currently forcing the club to its knees, reports Fox Sports.
The Bombers chairman and coach James Hird made emotional speeches at a press conference on Monday for the season launch of the club.
Currently the club is under close investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and the AFL. Evans has also commissioned an independent review of the club and its action in light of the allegations.
The joint investigation by the AFL and ASADA is likely to take months which will leave the club under a cloud of speculation for much of the 2013 AFL season.
Evans apologised to fans for the circumstances that have led to the investigation and admits that mistakes were made both by himself and the club.
While he admits that times were tough for the club he stuck by his assurances that the club would emerge from the current scandal and move on.
“Mistakes have been made and I sincerely apologise that they have occurred,” he said.
“We will get to the bottom of what happened, we will make sure those mistakes never happen again.”
The pressure and suspicion surrounding the club have already begun to take their toll on players, coaching staff and the fans.
Hird has complimented the Bombers players for remaining disciplined and focused on training despite the scandal and heavy scrutiny of the club.
