Song moved to Barcelona in 2012, but never really managed to tie down a first team spot at the Nou Camp. With the La Liga giants deciding to offload him this past summer, he allegedly had plenty of offers from France and Italy. His top priority was to return to England however, and with Arsenal unwilling to take him back he was forced to join Sam Allardyce at West Ham.
“I would have liked to go back [to Arsenal] but they did not want to,” he said.
“That’s life. Cesc Fabregas also wanted to return to Arsenal but they did not want to exercise their option. It is surprising when you see what he is doing at Chelsea. He is stronger than before.
“I could play in the Champions League in Italy, Napoli, Roma, or in Turkey. I could have played for Marseille but my priority was to return to England, for me and the family. I discovered a club that I did not know but it’s working well.”
Arsenal have been lacking a powerful defensive midfielder in recent years, and the 27-year-old could have been the player to fill the gap. He was apparently a negative influence during his first spell at the Emirates however, which has made Wenger hesitant to bring him back.
