Having wound down his contract with MLS giants New York Red Bulls at the end of the season last month, he had been widely tipped to continue his playing career elsewhere, but he has decided to call time on a highly successful career to return to London in the media.
“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football. It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved that have made my time in the game so special,” he said.
A reported £25m deal has been struck to convince him to link up with Sky sports, though as yet there is no confirmation on when he will start.
“It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports.”
