Manchester United should never have signed Radamel Falcao, insists former boss
The Red Devils have been in need of a centre-back throughout the season, with the form of goalkeeper David De Gea all that has kept scores respectable so far. In the summer they signed several players that have the ability to play in the middle of defence but are naturally full-backs, such as Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo.
The fellow Dutchman said, “The only thing for me that is a surprise is Van Gaal didn’t buy any good central defenders – that had to be his priority. He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Man Utd some good defenders because that was the weakest link.
He added, “For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play.”
The United boss has come under pressure recently with results slipping and fans criticising his style of play. The disappointing impact of big name signing Angel Di Maria has also been a point of contention in his tenure.
