According to The Age, the 34-year-old shot two men in Geelong in 2012 and 2013 and was found guilty on two counts of intentionally causing serious injury.
Nicholls, who played 16 games for Hawthorn and Richmond between 2001 and 2004, reportedly suffered an ice addiction and shot both men in the leg on two separate occasions.
However, Judge Coish said that Nicholls had since addressed his drug issues and was working as a mentor at the Inverleigh Football Club.
The report states that Nicholls must spend at least eight years in prison before being able to apply for parole.
