An executive committee will vote on whether to hold a winter tournament in Qatar
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes FIFA should look to relocate the 2022 World Cup to another country.
The world’s football governing body awarded hosting duties to Qatar in 2011 leading to fears that it would be impossible for teams to play in the scorching 50 degree temperatures should the traditional summer time slot be upheld.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter admitted the error in choosing the Middle Eastern country despite being aware of its climate, saying: “That may well be so, and it may well be that we made a mistake at the time.”
An executive committee set to vote next month on switching to the winter – possibly January- despite the fact it would disrupt the calendars of the major European leagues, but pundit Carrager believes the most viable solution would be move the tournament to another nation.
“For me, a World Cup is at the end of a season in the summer,” he told Sky Sports. “If FIFA have messed up and the conditions aren’t right then I think you have to look at it again and give it to somewhere else.
“You can’t be messing about with all the leagues in Europe and how it’s set up. It’s been this way for so long.
“If they’ve made a mistake I think they’ve got to rectify it.”
