Valencia’s star center back Nicolas Otamendi appears to be one step closer to joining Manchester United after he admitted that he has asked the La Liga club for a transfer.
According to the Metro, Otamendi has stated point-blank that he has made his wishes clear to both his agent and to the Valencia higher-ups. Otamendi was named to the La Liga Team of the Season after helping Valencia finish with the second fewest club losses and third fewest goals allowed en route to a 4th place finish on the League table.
“I’ve spoken with my agent and Valencia know what I want,” Otamendi said. “Therefore, every word my agent has said has obviously been with my permission and he has full permission to talk to who he wants… I spoke to the (club) President and my agent and they know my desires very well, but for now I’ve told my agent that my head is [with Argentina] and left him to it.”
The 27-year-old Argentinian – currently representing his nation in Copa America – set a career-high with 6 League goals in 35 appearances for Valencia in 2014-15. He has a £35 million release clause that would be well within Man United’s ability to match.
Man United was sorely in need of improved defense after giving up 10 goals in the final two months of the season, going 3-3-2 in the process. With Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal reportedly preparing as much as £200 million to spend, Otamendi could be the first superstar acquisition of the 2015-16 transfer window.
