Ferrari new boy Jean-Eric Vergne has admitted he has his eye on Kimi Raikkonen’s race seat for the 2016 F1 season.
The Frenchmen was dropped by Toro Rosso at the end of 2014 after being picked by Red Bull as a junior in 2007.
Vergne has filled the test driver role at Ferrari for 2015 and told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he would prefer to play the waiting game at the Italian outfit rather than drive for a back-end team.
“I know I gave my best and that’s why I have no regrets,” said Vergne, referring to his time at Toro Rosso.
“And now I’m at Ferrari which is also a great opportunity for 2016.
“If I was not able to race this year, I think what I have is better than being at Caterham or Marussia and always being last.”
Vergne was twice overlooked by Red Bull for a spot in its senior team, with Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat making up its driver lineup in 2015.
