According to the BBC, Delph was set to undergo a medical and complete his move on Saturday, but there was a sensational turn of events as he released an official statement on the club’s website to deny the reports.
“I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight,” he said, on the club’s website.
“I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”
The 25-year-old hasn’t travelled with the squad to Portugal on their pre-season tour, but it has been reported that is due to his wife giving birth to their second child rather than pushing for a transfer.
The England international received significant criticism from fans on social media after it was suggested that he was closing in on a move to the Etihad, particularly given that he released a statement when signing a new deal with Villa last season insisting he was fully committed to the club.
However, it appears as though he won’t be going anywhere this summer, with Tim Sherwood likely to be delighted with his decision.
