The Portuguese international is all set for his role as a makeweight in the Gareth Bale saga.
Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Real Madrid left-sider Fabio Coentrao has already held talks with Tottenham Hotspur.
Contrary to reports earlier in the summer, the Portuguese international will in fact be included as a part of the transfer of Gareth Bale – not as a stand-alone signing.
Thanks to Coentrao’s inclusion, Madrid’s cash offering to Spurs would be closer to £93m than the £100m previously offered by Madrid.
Coentrao and his agent were reported as meeting at a summit in Madrid with Tottenham staff earlier in the week.
Coentrao would most likely slot straight into Andre Villas-Boas’ side following Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s exile from the Tottenham team.
Assou-Ekotto failed to feature in a single pre-season game for Spurs, and young Englishman Danny Rose was given the start ahead of him for the first game of the season away to Crystal Palace.
Whilst a clear talent, Rose is still young. Spending last season on loan at Sunderland saw him become something of a crowd favourite, however his defensive capabilities are still questionable.
Coentrao has endured something of a similar experience to Assou-Ekotto at Madrid. After experiencing a period of good faith under compatriot Jose Mourinho, new manager Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that he has no plans for the 25-year-old.
