Spanish giants plotting hijack of Reds’ defender pursuit.
Spanish giants FC Barcelona have set their sights on signing Croatian international defender Dejan Lovren, who has been a prime transfer target for Liverpool in recent weeks, reports the Daily Express.
The 24-year old impressed in his first season in England with Southampton, and is now a hot property on the transfer market with the Saints going through a bit of a managerial crisis. Lovren has reportedly handed in a transfer request at St. Mary’s as he looks to force a move to a top European side.
The news of Barcelona entering the race for Lovren though will not amuse Liverpool, who have long been eyeing the former Lyon man in a bid to strengthen their defence ahead of next season’s Champions League challenge.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers though is reportedly ahead in the chase for Lovren and hopes to tie up a deal for bringing him to Anfield this summer, despite interest from the Spanish giants.
Barcelona likely want Lovren as a replacement for their recently retired centre-back Carles Puyol, but the Reds will in turn hope that the Croatian international would choose to stay in the Premier League.
