The Gunners prepare surprise swoop for Martinez.
Despite having bought Mesut Ozil for a club record £42.4m fee from Real Madrid, Arsenal are now looking into the possibility of signing Jackson Martinez from FC Porto, reports O Jogo.
The Gunners made several attempts to try and sign both Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez this summer, but to no avail and manager Arsene Wenger is keen to have alternatives to Olivier Giroud.
Although the Frenchman is in a rich vein of form, any injury to the 27-year-old would leave the side looking flimsy up-front.
The only alternatives to Giroud are the out-of-form Nicklas Bendtner and France under-20 striker Yaya Sanogo.
Lukas Podolski is also able to play up top, although is preferred as a left winger by Wenger and does not provide the poaching instinct in the box.
Martinez however is a proven goal-scorer, having netted 37 goals in 48 matches for Porto in all competitions since a transfer to the Portuguese champions in 2012.
The Colombia international is quickly becoming recognised as one of the sharpest players in front of goal in European football and is following in the steps of national team-mate Radamel Falcao.
With Suarez looking to make the switch to Real Madrid if anywhere and Higuain having signed for Napoli, Wenger will have to turn the Frenchman’s attention elsewhere for attacking support.
The north London side have started the 2013/14 campaign brilliantly, winning 10 of 11 matches so far this term and topping both the Premier League and their Champions League group.
