Ferguson signed Carrick from Tottenham in 2006, and he has since made 360 appearances for the club.
Speaking about Carrick, the former United boss said: “I think Michael’s the best central midfielder in English football, I think he’s the best English player in the game.”
Despite Ferguson’s comments, the 33-year-old has primarily been used as a centre back this season, to cover for United’s long-standing injury problems.
Carrick missed out on selection for England’s World Cup campaign last summer, but has continued to impress this season.
