According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, Alonso had forgotten the past 20 years of his life and believed he was still driving go-karts.
When asked by doctors to say what his name was and what he did for a living, Alonso had forgotten about his two world titles and the fact he was an F1 driver at all.
“I’m Fernando, I drive go karts and I want to be a Formula One driver,” Alonso reportedly said.
The 33-year-old will miss next weekend’s opening race in Melbourne on doctors orders after he lost control of his McLaren at 215km/h and hit a barrier.
Alonso suffered concussion due to the accident and was flown to a nearby hospital under sedation.
He remained in hospital for three nights, with McLaren issuing a inconclusive statement saying the former Ferrari man had suffered no medical issues.
Alonso will be replaced by reserve driver Kevin Magnussen for the Australian Grand Prix, which begins next Friday.
