Sterling is understood to have refused to sign a new deal with Merseyside club and has been linked to a host of rival Premier League clubs this summer.
According to Daily Star, cashed-up City are keen to finalise the 20-year-old’s transfer to the Etihad before the team jets off to Australia for the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.
City have already seen two bids for Sterling rejected, but the report suggests club bosses are confident Liverpool will accept a £45m up-front fee with a potential £5m in add-ons depending on the England international’s performances.
The deal would make Sterling the most expensive Englishman in history and will allow Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to dip even further into the transfer market despite having already signed the likes of Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Danny Ings and Nathaniel Clyne.
