Fiorentina have taken the lead over Swiss side Basel in their Europa League Group I opener this evening.
Nikola Kalinic was the scorer, sending the Stadio Artemio Franchi into raptures after just three minutes.
In truth the goal was highly fortuitous, with the Basel defender and keeper failing miserably to clear the danger. Their mix-up allowed Kalinic to capitalise, and the ball eventually rolled into the back of the net.
Fiorentina and Basel are arguably the two strongest teams in Group I; they will both be confident of beating Belenenses and Lech Poznań to a place in the last 32, regardless of tonight’s result.
