Fiorentina striker Luca Toni says Stevan Jovetic should not seek an Arsenal transfer, as it would be a sideways step.
Fiorentina striker Luca Toni has told his team-mate Stevan Jovetic that if he is to move to another club this summer, it should not be Arsenal.
Commenting on reports indicating that the Montenegro star is Arsenal’s top transfer target this summer, Luca Toni dismissed a switch to the Gunners as a sideways step.
“I tell him to think carefully before leaving Florence, as there is an important project here,” Toni told Sky Sports.
“If he has to leave, then make it for a real top club. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United fit that bill, but Arsenal are not better than Fiorentina.”
Arsenal have famously not won a trophy for eight consecutive seasons including the current campaign, but whether they are the same level as Fiorentina is a different matter.
Whilst of course not the trophy the north London club’s supporters crave, the Gunners have qualified for the UEFA Champions League in each of the last fifteen years.
What’s more, Arsenal have also progressed to the knockout stage of Europe’s premier competition in each of the last ten years, and whilst they usually fall at the quarter final or upon facing one of the favourites for the title, the Gunners’ track record under Arsene Wenger makes a case to say that they are amongst the best eight teams on the continent.
In contrast, Fiorentina have got used to midtable finishes over the last decade, and have only participated in Europe four times in that period – and on just two occasions in the UEFA Champions League.
Regardless of whether Arsenal are set to sign Jovetic, their status as a more successful club than Fiorentina can hardly be questioned – and perhaps Luca Toni’s comments are merely mischievous.
