Montella had become outspoken about the Fiorentina fans, pointing out that their behavior was wrong and that the players did not deserve to be criticized or jeered.
Fans expressed their anger at the players after a 5-0 loss to Sevilla FC in the Europa League semifinals.
The club did not take kindly to these comments, as they ruled that Montella violated the terms of his contract, which had one year remaining on it.
Montella also declined to sign a long-term contract, which made the Fiorentina organization impatient with him.
The team also proceeded to express their disappointment in Montella when they released a statement following his sacking.
“We would have expected clearer, more respectful and less ambiguous behavior from the coach, in respect of the shirt, the fans and the club which has given him so much.”
Despite his dramatic exit, Montella is currently being linked to job openings at AC Milan and Napoli.
Fiorentina will look to put their drama with Montella behind them, but it will be difficult to compete with Champions League runner-up Juventus for the Serie A title.
