One of the worst kept secrets in football this summer seems to be that Chelsea are going to announce the big-money signing of striker Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, with the Spain international set to be the lone striker in Jose Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 system at Stamford Bridge next season.
With experienced Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o already having been released, however, and Demba Ba and Fernando Torres possibly following him out of the exit door, Chelsea will need to find at least one other forward to keep the new arrival on his toes and cover for the possibility of a recurrence of the injuries that plagued Costa at the end of last season.
With this in mind, we’ve looked at five possibilities for Mourinho when it comes to beefing up his new strike force for the new season.
1) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)
The first potential back-up forward that the Blues have been linked with is Borussia Dortmund’s lightning quick Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who could be available for a cut-price fee of around £7 million from Signal Iduna Park this summer.
Aubameyang has enjoyed a fruitful season under Jurgen Klopp, despite struggling to break into the line-up on an everpresent basis after signing from Ligue 1 club St. Etienne last season.
The forward, whose most impressive attribute is his raw, seering pace, still scored 13 Bundesliga goals for Dortmund – including a hat-trick on his league debut.
