5. Ravi Bopara
The biggest surprise that came out of England’s squad announcement for the series against India was the omission of Ravi Bopara.
The Essex batsman had been a permanent member of the England side in recent years and has arguably been their best one-day batsman over the past year.
However, England dropped Bopara so that they could include another bowler, most likely Ben Stokes. Although Stokes is certainly a better bowler than Bopara, what England will miss is Bopara’s power hitting. He displayed his ability to hit boundaries many times for England.
It is strange that England have decided not to utilize that and push Bopara to the top of the batting order. He has taken bowling attacks apart for Essex when batting in the top four and there is no reason why he couldn’t do that for England.
With the World Cup just six months away, it seems a very odd decision by the selectors to leave out one of their most talented, attacking batsman.
