1. Stick with 4-4-2 or revert to a modern formation
Tottenham reverted to a 4-4-2 formation for Sherwood’s first match in charge against West Ham but any suggestions the switch was no more than an anti-AVB PR-stunt were dismissed when the 44-year-old stuck with the system for Sunday’s win at Southampton.
The recalled Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado impressed up front, with the former grabbing a brace on his first Premier League start of the season and the latter unlucky not to score after missing three second half chances. Spurs were full of attacking verve at St Mary’s, a far cry from AVB’s staid, slow build-up, but the visitors also looked vulnerable defensively and could have conceded more than two goals.
Manchester City are proving that 4-4-2 can work effectively home and way in the Premier League but Sherwood’s gung-ho approach may be punished by better teams than Southampton and the young head-coach must decide whether to stick with it, or at least ensure he has an effective Plan B.
