Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal will have a wealth of attacking talent to choose from this season with the likes of Angel Di Maria and Falcao joining Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie at Old Trafford. However, while the Red Devils signed plenty of attacking talent this summer, they failed to adequately strengthen their defence and replace the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who left at the start of the summer. So here are the five central defenders Manchester United should have signed.
1. Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)
The German centre back is thought to be one of the best defenders in the world at the moment. Hummels had an excellent World Cup, organising the eventual champions defence and making them very hard to score against. The defender is exactly what United need at the back and a lot of effort should have been made to try and sign the 25 year old. While the Red Devils did reportedly show an interest, Borussia Dortmund were reluctant to let their prized defender go. Hummels also seemed unwilling to leave the Bundesliga club however, if United had focused their attention and made the defender their number one target, they could have been successful in luring the German international to Old Trafford.
