Five potential answers to United’s centre-back problem.
Manchester United fans want their club to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.
The 25-year-old scored well in a supporters poll conducted by the Manchester Evening News earlier this week.
United boss Louis van Gaal is also rumoured to be keen on Hummels, but the player looks set to stay in Dortmund.
The Red Devils need a new centre-back, though, following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Here, we identify five players that United could sign if, as expected, they fail to land Hummels.
Dejan Lovren – Southampton
Lovren enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign in England after joining Southampton from Lyon in June 2013.
The 24-year-old was part of a formidable Saints defence that kept 15 clean sheets in 38 Premier League games. He also scored two goals.
Southampton paid £8.5m for Lovren, but his value has since swelled.
