4) Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal)
After controversially signing former Arsenal captain Robin van Persie in the summer of 2012, Manchester United could be set to do the same again this summer as they eye unsettled Gunners skipper Thomas Vermaelen as one of their central defensive targets.
The Belgian has been out of favour with Arsene Wenger for more than a year now after suffering a drop in form for the north London side.
Still, the 28-year-old remains one of the most commanding centre-backs in Europe on his day, and could benefit greatly from a move to get his career back on track.
There are certainly similarities with United legend Vidic, and the signing of this experienced Premier League defender could prove a good one for van Gaal.
