Newcastle hero Shearer was another who would have pushed Charlton close had his international career not come to a premature end – although this time by choice as he retired from England duty aged 30.
The lethal number nine was the top scorer as England reached the semi-finals of Euro 96, showing that he could deliver on the big stage – something that Rooney has been accused of failing to do. A mark of Rooney’s true greatness may be if he ever catches Shearer at the top of the all-time Premier League scoring charts. He is way out ahead on 260 goals – 75 more than Rooney has at present.
