3) Sir Geoff Hurst – Caps: 49, Goals: 24
It is often said that footballers are remembered not by individual records and statistics, but the trophies that they won – and Hurst is one of only 22 English players – as of a 2009 medal ceremony outside Downing Street – to have won the biggest prize in the game – the World Cup.
Hurst may not be able to match the quantity of goals scored by his counterparts, but the importance of his goals are unrivalled, and his hat-trick in England’s World Cup final win may never be repeated.
