Lineker had his own chance to equal Charlton’s record when he missed a penalty in a 1992 friendly against Brazil, but that does not tarnish the legacy of one of England’s most prolific ever marksman.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City striker is the Three Lions’ leading goalscorer at World Cup finals with 10 goals, and the only Englishman to win a World Cup golden boot – in 1986. Rooney has so far managed only one World Cup finals goal in 11 appearances.
