Five names that have to be considered for the England job if Hodgson is sacked.Following England’s second defeat in two group games at the 2014 World Cup, Roy Hodgson’s future as manager is already being called into question. The 66-year-old has insisted he will not resign from the position, but conceded there is little he can do if the FA do decide to end his time in charge of the national side.
Although Hodgson was largely praised before the start of the tournament as he opted to call up a number of promising young players in an attempt to introduce a new generation of England players that can go into future tournaments with more experience, two defeats to Italy and Uruguay look to be sending the Three Lions home from Brazil early – an outcome that shouldn’t be acceptable even with something of a makeshift squad.
Hodgson’s tactics have also come into question, with Wayne Rooney being deployed on the left flank against Italy and looking far from his best, and with defensive errors proving costly on arguably all of the goals England have conceded so far.
Could the England boss’ two-year reign already be over? Is it time for a younger, more innovative man to take over and guide this young group of players forward? Click below to see fanatix‘s top five contenders to take the job if Hodgson does leave.
