2. Nigel de Jong
It has been obvious for years that Man United need a midfield enforcer. Some said Marouane Fellaini would provide that when he signed for the club last season. However, the Belgian’s shocking first season at Old Trafford proved he doesn’t really have a place in the lineup and could be on his way out of Manchester before the transfer window closes.
In terms of an enforcer, United are now looking to sign a former Manchester City player to beef up their midifield. De Jong was a success during his time at the Etihad Stadium. He was excellent at breaking up attacks and protecting City’s back four. He is now at AC Milan but he could be on his way back to Manchester – although this time on the red side of the city.
Van Gaal is a huge admirer of de Jong as well, with the veteran coach giving the 29 year old an important role in the Dutch national team when he was manager. De Jong enjoyed his time working alongside van Gaal and would be interested in a reunion with his former boss.
Milan are willing to sell the Dutch enforcer for about £10 million which is an amount United could easily pay, even after the summer of spending that they’ve had.
