Graeme Smith: 3 v Australia, SCG (2009)
The South Africa captain earned the respect of the cricket world after batting with a broken hand in an attempt to force a draw against Australia at the SCG in 2009.
Smith had the hand broken by a typically brutal Mitchell Johnson delivery in the first innings, forcing him to retire on 30.
With one wicket in hand and 8.2 overs left on the final day’s play, Smith walked out to bat to a rapturous applause from the normally parochial Australian crowd.
Facing a rampant Johnson, every defensive stroke drew cheers of admiration from the crowd.
Smith was clearly in huge amounts of pain, with his busted left hand slipping off the bat after each defensive stroke.
It was brave, but it wasn’t to be as Smith was bowled by Johnson with less than two overs remaining.
