With the jury verdict in today that former Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez was guilty of murder in the first degree, Hernandez becomes the latest in a long line of former NFL players now facing many years in prison for major criminal charges along with Lawrence Phillips and Darren Sharper – just in the last few weeks.
And the cases against Hernandez aren’t done yet. He still has to face murder trials for the deaths of two men he allegedly killed in a drive-by shooting back in 2012.
Hernandez has a long way to go before all of his legal matters are resolved and he can begin serving his extremely long prison sentence. But he isn’t the first player to grace an NFL field to have spilled blood off of it.
Here is a look at five notorious killers in NFL history:
5. Rae Caruth (WR – Carolina Panthers)
A former 1st-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers, Caruth led all NFL rookies in receiving yards in 1997. However, in 1999 Carruth hired a hitman to murder his pregnant girlfriend. He was convicted in 2001 of consipracy to commit first degree murder as well as other related charges and was sentenced to 18-24 years in prison. He will be eligible for release in 2018.
