The new additions Rodgers needs to take that extra step.
The conclusion of the 2013/14 Premier League season left many Liverpool fans deflated, as after looking like winning their first title since 1990 they tailed off towards the end.
However, improving from seventh place to second in just 12 months is of great credit to manager Brendan Rodgers and the side don’t seem far off breaking what is approaching a 25 year drought since their last English league title.
Their top form also meant that the Reds will return to the Champions League next term for the first time since 2009 and as a result the squad needs to be strengthened.
It Rodgers’ side are to go one better in 2014/15 and actually win the division then here are five players that can help them achieve that.
Emre Can – Bayer Leverkusen
The Merseysiders’ boss has been keeping a close eye on this 20-year-old, who impressed greatly last campaign in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen.
Currently captain Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson are the preferred central midfield partnership at Anfield, but beyond that things look a little weak.
Lucas Leiva could well be sold this summer after falling out of favour and Joe Allen is adequate, if unremarkable, so bringing in Can could be a shrewd move to help protect the leaky back four.
