The ability to play three in the centre
New Manchester City signing Fernando, brought in from FC Porto this summer, is not the most eye-catching player as a solid, tough central midfielder – but he offers vital tactical flexibility to manager Manuel Pellegrini for his Champions League campaign. Pellegrini had no obvious third option in central midfield to play alongside Fernandinho and Yaya Toure when he wanted to switch to a more compact system for big European games – which is no longer the case now Fernando has arrived.
